the form of the structure follows the topography of the mountain

the bricks create a void with an opening at the top

inside the tubular structure sits the memorial’s central light funnel

walkways spiral around the perimeter of the structure

several 1:1 mockups of the project were built at ETH zurich

the concrete bricks are screwed together at pre-cut joints

the light that enters through the overhead oculus is filtered through the funnel

a continuous ‘wall of names’ wraps around the central brick structure

the enthusiasm were so strong that most of the guest of the island ended up building the cocoon toge

the wooden structure is lifted and attached to the metal rings situated on the tree trunk

nothing could disturb this quiet and enclosed space except the penetrating sunlight

the two levels are separated spatially, but connected logically in function

a relatively active space where exchanging books and sales activities happen periodically

the lower level enclosed by rubble used to be a dark and narrow living space for cows

provides locals, especially children, with a place to acquire knowledge from the outside world

if visitors want to see the stream, one step on the platform makes it a great difference

all readers that come here would retrospect the relationship between human, space and nature

the solid rubble wall on the first floor has been maintained

the design includes a few deserted agricultural buildings, such as utility rooms, cowsheds and barns

the goal is to transform this historical site into a tourist spot and unveil the great history of sh
